2014 year is coming to an end, that is why we decided to make some top-ranks and determine key takeaways and predictions for the future year. Let’s start from the most popular mobile apps in 2014.

Recently consulting company Betaworks published the first results of the campaign in which it tries to find out what applications are often placed on the first home screens of iPhones. Betaworks has already analyzed 13,000 screenshots home screens with 500 thousand applications. The five most popular apps are Instagram (on 45.82%  of all screens), Facebook (on 45.26% of all screens), Google Maps (on 37.71% of all screens), Twitter (on 33.63% of all screens) and Facebook Messenger (on  33.09% of all screens). It can be easily calculated that from the 28 most popular applications six belong Google, four - Facebook, and two - Dropxbox. Five from the most popular apps can be classified as messengers, four - as applications for reading news, three - as social networks, and two - as applications for mail.

Meanwhile, Mobidia, a Vancouver B.C.-based mobile analytics company, recently released a Top-25 leaderboard that ranks mobile apps and games based on active users for both iOS and Android across North America (USA, Canada Mexico), Europe (UK, Germany, Spain) and Asia (Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong).

Mobidia says its data is unique because it pulls information from monthly active users versus just download metrics within Mobidia’s “mega-panel of millions of global smartphone users.” For this reason we decided to use Mobidia’s leaderboard to determine our top-7. As you may guess, all apps in this rank are well-known for almost every user on this planet.
